Google AI Overviews is an AI-generated summary feature embedded directly into Google Search results. It is powered by a custom Gemini model (currently Gemini 3 as default since January 2026) using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to synthesize content from the web index, Knowledge Graph, and additional Google data sources. The feature is free for all users within the standard Google Search interface; there is no standalone public API for AI Overviews as a search product. Ads within AI Overviews have been available as an ad format since 2025.
