GitHub Copilot is a cloud-based AI coding assistant by GitHub (Microsoft) that integrates as an extension into popular IDEs, offering inline code completion, chat, autonomous agent mode, and a cloud-based coding agent. It supports switching between multiple LLMs from different providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, etc.). Billing was migrated in June 2026 from a flat-rate/premium-request model to token-based GitHub AI Credits. Full offline operation of the IDE extension is not supported; only Copilot CLI has offered an offline mode (with locally run models) since April 2026.
