Microsoft Majorana 2 is a topological quantum chip (QPU) unveiled on June 2, 2026 at Microsoft Build. It uses a new materials stack with lead replacing aluminum as the superconductor and an indium arsenide/indium arsenide antimonide semiconductor region, achieving a 1,000-fold improvement in qubit reliability over Majorana 1. The chip is based on topological qubits (tetron type with Majorana Zero Modes) and demonstrates a mean qubit lifetime of 20 seconds (up to ~1 minute maximum) with gate operations of 1 microsecond. The currently demonstrated device has 12 qubits; Microsoft targets a commercially viable scalable quantum computer by 2029 based on this architecture.
Features
| Inference Latency (ms) | Gate operation speed: 1 microsecond per operation (0.001 ms) – Note: this is a quantum gate latency, not an AI inference latency |
| Context Window/Max Input | Qubit count (currently demonstrated): 12 qubits (4-qubit array described in technical paper, BBC reports 12 qubits on the chip shown) |
| Price Tier | No public pricing provided; chip is not commercially available – Microsoft plans a commercially usable quantum computer by 2029 |
| Target Platform Type | Topological quantum processor (QPU) for quantum computing research and future fault-tolerant quantum computers; currently research/development hardware (not a commercial product) |
