HarmonyOS is Huawei's proprietary operating system developed in-house for smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, wearables, PCs, and other smart devices. It was unveiled in August 2019 and is based on a Microkernel architecture (HongMeng Kernel). The current generation HarmonyOS NEXT (also HarmonyOS 5, and from version 6 onwards without the "NEXT" suffix) was officially launched commercially on October 22, 2024, supports exclusively native HarmonyOS apps, and no longer contains any Android code (AOSP). The operating system is proprietary commercial software, but includes Open Source components from the OpenHarmony project (Apache License), which Huawei transferred to the OpenAtom Foundation.
